When I decided to narrate my audiobook edition of The Last Crossing, I didn’t know how important the following would be:
- Don’t narrate right after brushing my teeth and gargling. My mouth is dry and makes clicking sounds when I speak.
- Turn off my phone or leave it upstairs on the kitchen table.
- Increase the size of the document so I can see the text above the microphone.
- Don’t eat foods that make me burp (I know. TMI)
- Practice, practice, practice before I record.
It’s been a fun journey for Rich and me. The training we took helped, but some things we learned as we went along. Our learning curve was a vertical line, and now Rich’s knowledge about mastering an audiobook is amazing. He has a notebook full of schedules, processes, and notes to the narrator LOL that we call the “audiobible.”
I recorded some bloopers along the way, such as “smooth jazz serrated the shoppers” (it was supposed to be “serenaded the shoppers”). Honestly, I do not remember saying “serrated.” Ouch. That store won’t be in business long.
Other bloopers occurred when I anticipated what words were coming up in a sentence. Once I said, “Amble bundled Maggie into a dressing room.” The young woman’s name was Amber, but she bundled and somehow became Amble. Another time it was, “Courtly leaned forward.” Yeah, it was Courtney.
The interesting thing was hearing these errors but not remembering that I said them. Rich was incredibly patient with my retakes.
What I loved about narrating my book was experiencing my characters on a deeper level. I had to become them as I read, and the emotions they dealt with came alive within me. Sounds rather melodramatic, but its true. A few times I cried, often I laughed out loud.
Now I’m thrilled to have all three books in The Finger Lakes Mysteries series available on audiobook. For your listening pleasure:

“Love this series as stated each book gets better and they are not cliff hangers. Each book tells its own story.” ~Kindle reader
I love your post and thoroughly enjoyed your books. Will there be a fourth. We lived in Clinton, NY for 17 years, and our daughter went to college in Geneseo. That increased my enjoyment of your books. Thanks.
Hey, Judy! thanks for your kind words. There could possibly, maybe, be a fourth book… I’m working on it 😉 I’m glad you got all the “local color” since you lived in the area and your daughter went to school in Geneseo. I keep trying to include Wegman’s LOL I actually worked in the deli of the one of the original stores back in the day.
